SPROSS – Provincial Strategy for Sustainable Development

A project of the Autonomous Province of Trento to define the provincial strategy for Sustainable Development (SproSS in Italian), aligned with the National Strategy and Agenda 2030.

Skopia participated actively in engaging three social groups (students, stakeholders, and experts), with diverse objectives: from the first two groups, support was sought in defining shared desirable futures, i.e., the expected outcomes of the strategy, while the experts’ contribution refined these definitions in synergy with current sectoral provincial plans or strategies.

Through the establishment of participatory forums and the use of the Three Horizons method, 160 students from 8 different institutes, 60 university students, as well as citizens and experts, were involved in guided discussions both in person and via webinar.

This journey led to a vision of a sustainable Trentino region in the future and identified actions to achieve this envisioned future: 5 strategic areas for a Trentino region that is + Intelligent, + Green, + Connected, + Social, and + Close to Citizens, along with 20 provincial sustainability goals.

Mobility, Wellbeing, and Intangibles

Since 2017, Skopìa has collaborated with the Reputational & Emerging Risk Observatory of the Unipol Group. The collaboration began with the development of 3 sets of complex strategic scenarios on Mobility, Wellbeing, Intangibles, and Rami Property by 2040, aimed at identifying potential future changes. These scenarios were crafted with the involvement of cross-functional teams to leverage internal know-how, blend diverse perspectives, and integrate various skills. The goal is to prepare the companies of the Unipol Group to navigate future(s), enabling more informed decisions in the present and developing “future-proof” strategic choices.

Together with the Group, we designed an innovative tool, the “Scenario Compass,” to anticipate potential directions of reality based on identified scenarios. This tool is constructed using a sophisticated pattern of indices.

The objective is not only to create these tools and make them available for strategic decisions within the Group but also to establish a link between the scenarios and Unipol Group three-year Industrial Plan.

Terme di Comano in 2040: Health, Well-being, Tourism, and Territorial Values.

Skopìa supported Terme di Comano in a training program, followed by the development of four strategic scenarios to envision and design the thermal sector, specifically Terme di Comano in 2040.

The project aimed to achieve three major objectives: fostering shared knowledge through information exchange, establishing an identity, and building a robust company with a competitive long-term positioning strategy.

The construction of strategic scenarios led to the definition of five pillars that now form the company’s new strategy and identity. With this framework in place, a desirable scenario was envisioned, and milestones were set through the Backcasting method to outline an action plan.

GAL Prealpi Dolomiti

As part of the Programmatic Area Agreement (IPA in Italian) for the Prealps and Dolomites, the Local Action Group (GAL in Italian) Prealps and Dolomites in the Belluno area has spearheaded an innovative participatory process involving all major stakeholders in the region. The outcome is a territorial planning document titled “Strategic Vision – Programmatic Area Document.”

This represents an innovative approach to participatory planning that utilizes “futures tools” to design the strategy for a territory. It is based on the belief that without a vision for the future, it is impossible to help communities, institutions, and businesses become aware and effective actors in their future. The adoption of “anticipation methods” (futures exercises) has supported decentralized programming, fostering territorial consensus and integrating policies and related tools.

The structure of the document itself, which includes the new 2040 Territory Vision, follows the phases of a future exercise to meet the challenges ahead: an initial phase exploring possible futures, a second phase of documentation to consolidate findings, and finally, a third phase aimed at anticipating the Territory Vision through execution, that is the concrete implementation of actions to create desired futures.

Futures Atelier - Re-Care Project

The Re-Care project was designed to promote resilience and reintegration of caregiving staff in long-term care facilities (nursing homes and home care). The project aimed to work with healthcare professionals on their approach to the future, incorporating a comprehensive proposal that included continuous training and promotion of a positive work environment within healthcare organizations.

Skopìa participated in the project by providing innovative training to support facilitators and make them capable of managing “Futures Atelier” (Futures Workshops). Six units were formed, consisting of one or two teachers from the specialized nursing school of the Canton of Ticino and one or two caregivers from the participating healthcare facilities. These units organized and conducted future-oriented workshops at the respective healthcare institutions, structured in an interprofessional manner.

During these workshops, original anticipatory approaches were proposed to support the long-term development of each institution and to address burnout issues, while enhancing the attractiveness of the profession for healthcare workers.
